[Fresh & Dedicated VPN] Windows XP - VPN Setup - OpenVPN setup guide [IPBurger] (Not Recommended)

  • We recommend you to upgrade your system to Windows 7 or 10 to use a premium, feature-rich software Viscosity for a smoother experience.
  • For Windows Vista we have a separate guide.

At times, we have seen our users installing Windows XP on a VM, and using IPburger IPs from those VMs. Also, at times, users want just a very light software for Windows OSes. We recommend upgrading your system to Windows 7+ version to use a premium, feature-rich software 'Viscosity' for a smoother experience.

To support such of our users,

  1. We have made some internal changes, which allow users to download IP VPN profiles easily from the interface.
  2. We are putting up this easy-to-follow step by step guide, which uses OpenVPN client software, which is very light (1.9MB).

Overview of the guide:

  1. Downloading and Installing OpenVPN client software
  2. Downloading your IP Profile
  3. Import your VPN profile into the software
  4. Test your VPN connection
  5. Using Multiple IPs with OpenVPN
  6. Using Kill Switch with OpenVPN

Step by step guide

1) Downloading and Installing OpenVPN client software

If you have already downloaded and installed this software earlier for another IP of yours, you don't need to install the software again.

At IPBurger, we are using OpenVPN protocol to serve IPs to our users. OpenVPN is the most secure protocol for VPN. To connect using OpenVPN protocol, we use OpenVPN client software. This software, is very light (around 1.9 MB) and uses very low amount system resources. It is the best option for users, who are looking for a light VPN software.
Download OpenVPN client software: For Windows XP

Once the 'File download' dialog box opens, click on 'Save'.

Inside the 'Save as' dialog box, go to 'Desktop', and click 'Save'.

Once dowloaded, go to Desktop on your computer, and double-click on the downloaded file - ipburger-openvpn-winxp.exe

In the 'Open File' dialog, click 'Run'.

Click 'Next' and follow the installation process till the end.

Once it finishes, you will see this dialog box, with two checkboxes.

  • Check 'Start Open-VPN GUI'
  • Uncheck 'Show Readme'

Click on 'Finish'.

In your system tray, confirm that OpenVPN GUI is running, as shown in the screenshot below.

Great! You have successfully installed the OpenVPN software. Using this software in combination with the VPN profile that we will download in the second step, we will connect with IPBurger.

Note: Please do not open the OVPN file ( [dedicated-ip].ovpn ) with any software, just leave it on the desktop as it is.

2) Downloading your IP Profile

Every IP that you purchased from us, generates a VPN profile. To connect to your purchased IP, we make use of this VPN profile. Here you will see how to download your VPN profile, and save it for later use.

To be able to download the VPN profile, the minimum requirement for the internet browser is Internet Explorer 8. IE6 or 7 won't be able to download the VPN profile. We recommend that you download Google Chrome, Firefox and any other latest browser.

Open your internet browser, go to http://secure.ipburger.com, and log in into your account.

Once you are logged in, click on 'Services' box, that mentions the number of your active IP services.

Click on the IP service which you want to set up on your computer.

Click on the yellow button that says 'Download your VPN profile'.

Once the 'File download' dialog box opens, click on 'Save'.

Inside the 'Save as' dialog box, go to 'Desktop', ensure that name of the file is [assigned-ip].ovpn, and click 'Save'.

Once downloaded, go to Desktop on your computer, and ensure that your IP profile file is saved there. The name of the file HAS to be [assigned-ip].ovpn, as you can see in the screenshot below. Do not open the file and let it be as it is on the desktop.

Great! Now you have your IP profile file with you, saved on your Desktop. We will use this file in the later steps.

3) Import your VPN profile into the software

Now we will use the VPN profile that we downloaded in the second step, import it into the OpenVPN software, and we are ready to connect.

Make sure that you have the file [assigned-ip].ovpn on your desktop. This is your VPN profile file.

Go to Start -> All Programs -> OpenVPN -> Shortcuts -> OpenVPN configuration file directory, as shown in the screenshot.

The folder named 'config' will open. Confirm that the folder's name is config in the title bar, and the address is C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config or C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config in the address bar.

Copy the VPN profile file [assigned-ip].ovpn to this folder. You can directly just drag the file [assigned-ip].ovpn from Desktop to this folder. Ensure that the file is successfully copied in the directory.

Great! Now you are ready to connect and use the VPN service.

To connect Right Click on OpenVPN tray icon, and click Connect.

A dialog box with connection log will open. If you are not interested in the details of connection, you can simply 'Hide' it.

Once connected, you will see that the OpenVPN icon in the tray has turned green, and it shows 'Connected'.

Awesome! Now you are connected with the internet using your IP purchased from IPBurger.

Go to http://www.ipburger.com and confirm your public IP address and the country of the IP address.

4) Test your VPN connection

After you are connected with the VPN, we recommend that you run all the tests given here: How to test if your VPN connection is fully secured? - IP and DNS leak tests

If you have issues following the guide, or you are unable to connect, you can al

5) Using Multiple IPs with OpenVPN

Many of our users have more than one service registered with us. It is possible and is easy to use multiple IPs on a single device.

Let's see how.

Process to import the second IP profile into the OpenVPN software is similar to that of importing the first one. Once, you move the .ovpn file in the config folder of OpenVPN, it should look like this:

Once, you are done with placing the file in the config folder, you can see the IP profile by clicking the OpenVPN icon in the bottom tray and it should look like this.

Now, you can connect any one of these IPs at a time.

Make sure, you disconnect one IP before you connect to another one.

Using multiple user accounts

Some of our clients prefer creating multiple user accounts on the computer and use one IP from each user account. If you are doing so, please make sure you manually disconnect from one IP before you log out of the user account and log into another one and connect to another IP.

If one IP stays connected (even in another user account on the device), the second IP won't work unless the first one is disconnected.

6) Using Kill Switch with OpenVPN

There is a high risk of suspensions on stealth accounts, if you real IP is ever revealed to them. That's why we use a dedicated IP provided by a VPN service, such as IPBurger. We all know how flaky the internet is sometimes, and in such cases, the VPN might keep disconnecting/reconnecting. When it happens, you might connect with the internet with with your real IP address.

To avoid such risks of IP leaks, killswitch is necessary. A killswitch blocks you from accessing the internet temporarily if you are accidentally disconnected from the VPN. You can follow the guide here to use Kill Switch along with OpenVPN.

If you have issues following the guide, or you are unable to connect, you can always reach out to us at [email protected]
